THE Senate Committee on Education, on Monday, queried the National Business and Technical Education Board (NABTEB) for spending a total sum of N410 million as cost of printing scratch cards for the May/June and November/December 2012 examinations.
The Registrar/Chief Executive of NABTEB, Dr Olatunji Aworanti, had, whileaddressing the committee, which was on a tour of federal education institutions in Edo State, said the amount was embedded in the examination charges for the over 300,000 students who wrote the examinations conducted by NABTEB in 2012.
Dr Aworanti, while giving clarifications on a question raised by a member ofthe committee, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, explained that since the board was not empowered to operate its printing facility, it had to go into partnership with a private printing firm to provide scratch cards.
The registrar, however, solicited the support of the committee in theprovision of infrastructural facilities, adding that the recent reduction in thepersonnel cost of the board from N80 million to N67million was affecting payment of salary for the 648 members of staff of the board.
Chairman of the Senate Committee,Senator Uche Chukwumerije, while speaking on the challenges facing NABTEB, said the committee would provide the necessary support to NABTEB, adding that Nigerias development partly depended on theprovision of technical education.
