Volkswagen 'Fastest-ever' Golf Revealed (PHOTO)
Ahead of its formal debut at the 2013 Frankfurt motor show, the Volkswagen Golf R was previewed online.
Based on the seventh generation of the Golf, the all-wheel-drive R features the turbocharged 2-litre four-cylinder engine found in the MkVII GTI, but produces 296 horsepower and 280lb-ft of torque – increases of 86hp and 24lb-ft, respectively, over the GTI.
Volkswagen claims the R will reach 62mph from a standstill in 4.9 seconds.

BBA Final Showdown: All Eyes on Melvin, Beverly
As
this year’s Big Brother Africa (BBA) television reality show comes to
an end. The anticipations about who will take home the princely $300,000
(about N48 million) grand prize on Sunday, 25 August, are as high as never before.
With
last week’s exit of dreadlocked South Africa’s Angelo Collins, who was
one of the favourites for the grand prize, and Ethiopia’s Bimp, the top 5
for the final looks like this: the two Nigerians – Beverly Osu and
Melvin Oduah, Ghana’s Elikem, Namibia’s Dillish, and Zambia’s Cleo.
The
five have survived 88 days in the House and now need every vote
possible to get their hands on the much sought after grand cash prize.
On
26 May, 28 housemates from 14 countries entered the Big Brother House
in Johannesburg, South Africa for a 91-day of fun and entertainment in a
secluded environment. But as the end of The Chase is just days away,
social media, especially Facebook and Twitter, have been abuzz with fans
getting creative with their support for their favourite housemates.
Whoever
wins on Sunday would hug instant fame and fortune, joining the likes of
Nigeria’s Kevin Pam Chuwang (2009), Uti Nwachukwu (2010), Karen Igho
(2011) and South Africa’s Keagan Petersen, who was last year’s winner of
the show.
The
two Nigerian representatives have been enjoying massive votes from
Nigerians and other Africans. Melvin seems to be the favourite, but
Beverly is also attracting attention from fans and laying a huge claim
to the grand prize in spite of the opprobrium she attracted from some
quarters over her controversial intimate encounters with Angelo in the
house.
Angelo,
who approached five ladies while in the house, told IK Osakioduwa, the
show host, during the live eviction show last Sunday that Beverly wanted
more sex after their scandalous romp under the duvet and in the
bathtub.
“I
like Beverly because she is a strong woman and she would go for
whatever she wants. Beverly told me it has been over one week since we
last did it (referring to the sex in the bath tub) but I said NO. I
promised my mother I would not do such, so I can’t do it again,” Angelo
said of Nigeria’s video vixen.
On
top of the $300,000 grand prize that each of the top five Housemates
are in line to win, last night, each of the Chase housemates were given
an opportunity to win a piece of jewellery worth $1000.
“In
the House is a box from down memory lane and on the middle box is a
picture of each remaining Housemate. On the picture is a space for a
hand. On the sound of the buzzer, each Housemate will have to put their
right hand on the picture of their face where the hand mark is placed.
This will be an endurance Task,” read Biggie’s Brief to the Top 5.
Except
for Melvin, who claimed to have jewellery worth $3000, four other
housemates faced off in an Endurance Task where each of them had to
place their hand on a box with their picture on it and whoever manages
to hold on the longest and outlast the others would be crowned the
winner and walk away with the $1000 jewellery prize.
After
a long and excruciating battle, that saw her fight through fatigue,
hunger and cramped hands, Dillish bagged herself a beautiful prize that
consists of a piece of jewellery of her choice worth $1000.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s DJ Xclusive will make a return to the Big Brother House to shut down the final Channel O Party tomorrow.
The
hip WizKid’s official DJ and Lagos urban radio station Cool 96.9 FM’s
DJ in a message promised to make it a party to remember as it will be
the housemates’ last party.
SHOCKING: Medical Director Commits Suicide
The
Medical Director of City Convalescent Clinic, Mr. Okereke committed
suicide this morning at his residence, 13, Aliu Street, Kosofe by
Ile-Iwe Bus-stop, Ketu, western Nigeria.The body of the deceased was found by his wife dangling from the ceiling fan in one of the rooms of their two-storey building, which also houses a clinic. The reason why he took his life could not be ascertained as he did not leave any suicide note behind.
According to a neighbour, they woke up this morning and heard people wailing from the clinic and when they got there the wife of the deceased, who wept uncontrollably, narrated how she discovered the lifeless body of her late husband hanging from the ceiling this morning.
“The wife of the deceased is yet to come to terms with the reality that her husband is no more. From what she said, her late husband left her in their room. And after waiting for a while, she decided to look for her husband only for her to find the lifeless body hanging from a ceiling fan in an adjoining room,” the neighbour said.
Neighbours described the deceased as an easy going man who was always ready to treat ailing patients that come to the hospital. Most of them are still in shock as to why he committed suicide.
According to reports, the deceased was married to his first wife for 10 years without her bearing him a child and had to marry the present wife who bore him the two kids he left behind.
Attempts to speak with the Divisional Police Officer the Alapere Police Station proved abortive as correspondent was directed to the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Ngozi Braide.
When Braide was contacted, she said she is yet to be briefed about what happened.
TRAGEDY: 3-Year Old Boy Drowns In Well!!
Tragedy occurred on Wednesday at Ofada area of Mowe, Ogun State, southwest Nigeria, when a three-year old boy fell into an open well and drowned.
The little boy, Ola William, had just returned from tutorials in his school and was playing around the vicinity when the incident happened.
According to information, the well had been left uncovered since it was dug and was quickly covered after the boy died inside it.
The mother of the child went out and left the boy in the care of her younger brother, who also went out and left him in the care of their grandmother at home.
Neigbours said none of them saw the boy when he wandered to where the well is located.
It was gathered that when William’s mother came back from Lagos, she inquired about the whereabouts of her child, but no one could tell her where he was. After a long period of inquiry and search, one of the search parties discovered the slippers of William beside the well. On getting to the well, the little boy was seen floating on water, having been dead for hours.
Executive Director, Esther Child Rights Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation, NGO, Mrs. Esther Ogwu said the demise of the boy was reported at the police station at Ofada and was later referred to the Owode Police Station.
Ogwu advised parents to always take proper care of their children to avert similar tragedy. She said if little William had been properly monitored, his death would have been averted. “Parents should monitor the movement of their children. That boy was their only child and now he is dead. It is very sad that this kind of thing should happen to the family,” she said.
Chris Brown Angry with Sentence, Blasts 'Racist' District Attorney
Chris
Brown blasted the "racist" District Attorney involved in getting him
sentenced to 1,000 more hours of community service in a Twitter rant on
August 22, 2013, Thursday. The rant comes after a court hearing last
week.
Brown's
probation was reinstated and the singer was sentenced to 1,000
additional hours of community labor on Friday, August 16, by Superior
Court Judge James Brandlin.
The
sentencing came after a May hit-and-run incident as well as a dispute
over the community service he performed following his 2009 assault case
involving ex-girlfriend Rihanna.
In
2009, Brown was sentenced to 1,440 hours of community service, which he
is said to have completed in Virginia. But in February, LA County
Deputy Dist. Atty. Mary A. Murray accused the singer of submitting false
reports.

PHOTO: Baby With Two Heads: 8-Month-Old Boy Undergoes Successful Surgery
According to doctors, the second head was a 'parasitic twin', which weighed almost a kilo and had brain tissue within it.
He has now had the 'head' removed in a painstaking five-hour operation.
Neuro-surgeon Sisir Das, from Kolkata’s Apollo Gleneagles Hospital, told journalists, ‘I have never operated on such a big lesion. It was a very critical operation and slightest slip-up during the vital surgery might have ended the life of the baby.'
He added that even returning Tofajjal to his parents was a challenge, as they live in a very remote village.
Doctors say Tofajjal has already shown signs of speedy recovery post the surgery and it is hoped he will be able to lead a relatively normal life.

15-Year Old Boy Survives Building Collapse
A 15-year-old boy narrowly escaped being killed on Tuesday after a fraction of a building collapsed on him at Pipeline area of Kubwa in Bwari Area Council.
A witness said the victim was sent on an errand within the area where some structures were recently demolished.
“As he was passing through one of the buildings, a side of the structure fell on him, and left him badly injured,” the witness said.
According to the witness, the victim’s screaming attracted neighbours around, who came and rescued him, and later took him to the Kubwa General hospital for treatment.
The head of the Accident and Emergency Unit, Paul Olise, confirmed the incident, and said the victim is presently in a stable condition.
22-Year-Old Woman Gang-raped In India
A young woman
photojournalist was gang raped while her male colleague was tied up and
beaten in India's business hub of Mumbai, police said Friday.
Police said the woman was on assignment to take pictures of an abandoned textile factory in south Mumbai late Thursday when five men confronted her with an offer to help her get permission to shoot inside the building.
Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh told reporters that the men tied her colleague's hands with a belt while she was gang raped.
The woman, 22, is in stable condition in hospital.
The assault comes amid heightened concerns about sexual violence in India. The gang rape and death of the student on a bus in New Delhi in December had shaken a country long inured to violence against women and sparked protests demanding better protection for women.
In response, the government passed a new stringent law increasing prison terms for rape and making voyeurism, stalking, acid attacks and the trafficking of women punishable under criminal law.
The police have released sketches of the men based on descriptions given by the woman and her colleague, and have formed several teams to track them.
Singh said the area where the attack took place was very isolated and the men may have been local drug dealers.

The performer, Go Go Amy, recently did a show at Abertay University in Dundee, Scotland, with her troupe, The Pretty Things PeepShow.
Go Go Amy's act climaxed with a fire dance that included her lighting up her nipple tassels.
After she was done performing, the smoke from the flaming nipple tassels lingered in the air and set off the building's alarms, forcing hundreds of customers to be evacuated, according to the Metro.
"I usually look for smoke alarms above the stage," she said. "I didn't see there was one behind me."

SHOCKING: Native Doctors’ Herbal Abortions Keep Killing Pregnant Teens
At least 23 young pregnant girls have become the victims of the use of native concoction for abortion in only one year.
It
has been learnt that teenage girls within some communities in Agbor,
Kwale, Isoko North and South who became pregnant and were desperate to
do away with the pregnancies, sought the help of local doctors, who
prepared and administered the herbal concoctions, which ended up costing
them their lives, most times.
Although
security agents have arrested several native doctors in the areas over
their use of the portions in terminating pregnancies, the increasing
number of deaths arising from intake of the portions now poses serious
threats to the free medical health services introduced by the
administration of Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, especially for pregnant women.
The
investigation further revealed that teenage girls between 15 and 16
years old, who have dropped out of school because of the unwanted
pregnancies, are seen hanging around communities in Isoko, Kwale, Agbor
and Asaba communities, waiting for ‘remedies’ from the native doctors.
The
police, through its spokesman, ASP Lucky Uyabeme, have warned that it
will no longer be business as usual for the “quacks” who specialise in
preparing the concoction for some of the girls, and encouraging them to
take them.
A
native doctor who refused to give his name revealed that did not want
his name in the print, said: “We give them concoction when the pregnancy
is just two months and warn them against misuses”. But further
investigations revealed that these girls find difficult to check into
hospitals, because they fear that they might be ridiculed and arrested.
Meanwhile,
sources have revealed that native doctors across Delta State have
allegedly taken to provision of love portions, for desperate young men
who wish to have fun with unsuspecting teenage girls of their choice. The charms, the sources revealed, go for between N10, 000 and N15, 000.
"Operation Restore Morality": 21 Sex Workers Nailed In Jigawa
21 suspected commercial sex workers have been arrested in the course of 'Operation Restore Morality' in Jigawa State, according to the state commander-general of the Hisba Guards, Malam Saadu Aliyu.
The operation was conducted by the Hisba command in a bid to curb activities of sex workers in some parts of the state.
Mr. Aliyu disclosed that the arrests were made in the Chaichai and Larabar Tambarin Gwani areas, the places chosen by the women as their haven.
The local youths are becoming morally degraded because of the activities of sex workers, Mr. Aliyu lamented, adding that measures have to be taken.
"Also, their immoral and abominable business is attracting the activities of criminals who are using their centres as a hide-out in the state.
"The arrested suspects would be handed over to police for investigation before taken to the court," Aliyu said in conclusion, and stressed once again that the Hisba Guard are determined to fight all sort of immoral activities in the state.

Police there say a 29-year-old man strangled his girlfriend and sent a photo of her body via What'sApp to her sister, apologizing for what he had done.
He also informed the family of his whereabouts, and police soon arrived, found the body, and arrested him. The IBT quotes local media as saying that the man, identified only by his surname of Macotelo, had copied the earlier incident from Florida.
In that case, newly released police documents reveal that Derek Medina admitted to detectives that he repeatedly shot his wife when she threatened to leave him, then posted the Facebook confession, reports the Miami Herald. The 31-year-old faces first-degree murder charges and will be arraigned later this month.

Calabar for allegedly defiling a two-year-old girl and infecting her
with a sexually transmitted disease.
The incident happened in Okom Ita, Akamkpa Local Government Area, Cross River State, when the two-year old girl (name withehld) strolled from her mother’s room into Bashiru’s apartment to play with the man she calls “uncle.”
Margaret, the toddler’s mother who narrated the incident said she did not stop her daughter from going into Bashiru’s room because she considered him a neighbour who could not harm her daughter.
She said: “We have been living together for some time and now, so when my daughter went into his room I did not stop her even when she later came out and complained that she was having pains in her private part. I thought it was ordinary pain until in the evening when I wanted to bath her and she began to cry when soap touched her private part.”
Margaret said when she reported the incident to the police, Basiru was arrested and taken to the Akamkpa police station .
